What dating with intention actually means
It is not about certainty or intensity. It is about being honest about the life you want to build.
“Dating with intention” can sound severe: a colour-coded plan for romance, perhaps, or an expectation that every coffee date carry the weight of the future. In practice, it is much simpler and kinder than that.
Intention is a compass, not a script
Being intentional means having a rough sense of what matters to you. You might value emotional availability, shared curiosity, a desire for partnership, or enough geographical closeness to make a relationship possible. These are not demands to impose on a stranger. They are guideposts for your own choices.
Let honesty arrive in layers
You do not have to explain your full relationship history before the drinks arrive. But you can be honest at each stage about where you are. When there is potential, a direct sentence can be remarkably calming: “I’m enjoying getting to know you, and I’m interested in seeing where this could go.”
Leave room for surprise
Clarity does not mean closing yourself off to people who differ from your imagined type. It means noticing the difference between a healthy surprise and a familiar compromise. The right connection may not follow your script—but it should still make sense in the life you are living.
